Admission requirements

Formal Admission Requirements

  • A qualified Bachelor's degree in physics. The Bachelor's degree has to be equivalent to a B.Sc. degree in physics obtained at a German university with an above-average grade. The admission committee of the PHYSICS program will check the equivalency.
  • An official English proficiency certificate, e.g. TOEFL ( ibt: 80, cbt: 213, pbt: 550), IELTS Band 6.0, Cambridge Advanced Certificate in English (CAE) or Cambridge Proficiency in English Certificate (CPE) are mandatory.
  • High school degree/degree qualifying you to enter university.
  • University entrance exam/nationwide placement test (if it does exist in your country).
  • Applicants from China, Mongolia or Vietnam have to provide an original APS certificate (no photocopy) which is issued by the German embassy in your home country. Please check the homepage of the German embassy for details.

All details on the application process for the next application period (including a packing list and important dates) can be found here.

Important notes about English proficiency certificate

All applicants have to provide an official English proficiency certificate, even if language of instruction at their university was English. Exceptions are only possible for English native speakers passing their whole studies in countries like e.g. UK, USA, English speaking part of Canada, New Zeeland, Australia. If you are not sure to fulfill the requirements for exemption, please contact us before sending your application package.

Please consider that in many countries it might take up to several months to get a seat for a TOEFL or IELTS and another 4-6 weeks to receive the results.

Important notes for applicants not holding a physics degree

Applicants who did not study physics but a related subject can only be considered if they passed sufficient courses in physics during their studies. Very important are courses e.g. in theoretical physics like: Theoretical Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics and Quantum Mechanics.

If you are a holder of a non-physics degree and you are interested in applying for our program, please contact us in advance best by sending us a scan of your transcript by email.
